GM pickups experiencing clunk when taking off.

Post by dmatchett » Thu Mar 10, 2016 10:52 am

Most of the GM pickups have experience a clunk, bump, or squawk when vehicle comes
to a stop or when accelerating from a stop, the noise then goes away, the reason
for this is the slip yoke is sticking, GM has fix this problem by having the manufacturer
nickel coat the yoke. A similar noise problem could also be the rear suspension bushings
inside the rear shackle, be sure to verify that these bushings are not worn.

There are greases out there designed to eliminate this issue.

GM uses a POA Synthetic grease, part number 19257121 that is greenish in color, it comes in a 1 lb. can.

Ford uses a PTFE (Teflon) grease part number XG-8-A that is light blue in color, it comes in a 1 lb. can.

Ford also make a syringe with the grease in it for one time use that is made of Calcium carbonate part number 5L3Z-19A506-A that works well too.

I have used the Ford PTFE grease since the 70's and it works great for slip yoke binding. Whatever you do not use "anti-seize" as a spline lubricate.

The GM grease is a fairly new product and it is synthetic. I have less experience with it. I know the PFTE works well.

GM used to have a PTFE grease and we used it here at Toyota for the same issue with Tacomas. Our old owner saw the GM can and threw it away. I will get some of the Ford XG-8-A and start using it since GM stopped carrying the old formula

Is this a problem that could do damage if left unaddressed? Or is it simply an annoyance?
