Ford F150 5.4L 12 bolt rear differential chatter issues

Post by dmatchett » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:06 am

One of the most common calls sales staff will get is for a clutch pack or OEM posi unit to
correct the "chatter" or "crow hopping" effect on all the Ford F150 5.4L 12 bolt rear differentials
with a severe chatter problem, this is an OEM design problem and replacing the clutches does not
rectify the problem, Ford came out with a shim kit to install with the new clutch pack and this still
has not solve the problem, the best fix on the market is to replace the posi traction unit with an
Auburn posi 542090 (763B715A) and ignore Ford's oil recommendation and use 80W90 gear oil with
the additive that is included with the unit.

Doug Thanks for that info, just talked to a buddy having this problem last week. Also 80/90 love that stuff! Only way to go.

I have found on those that the break-away-torque setting from the factory was extremely high, Fords new shim kit lowers it but sometimes not enough. Make sure you are using only Ford limited slip additive and not the GM stuff. Also make sure if replacing the clutches with new ones you soak them with one bottle of additive and put a second bottle of additive in the fluid.

i used to work at a ford dealer and dealt with this a few times a week what i would do is end up soaking clutches in straight friction modifier, than i would use the smallest shims i could and i would do like tschafers said add two bottles of friction mod and they woudl go away
