4R100 overheating

Post by GNeric » Sun Jul 30, 2017 3:29 pm

Had a 2003 4R100 4x4 trans come in as a bench job. They ran it out of oil and it cooked Intermediate clutch. Had shift failure codes. Overhaul with new stator support, bearing, coast clutch drum (all destroyed from lack of lube), all parts replaced matched originals, master kit, band, solenoid pack, Trans Go kit. They flushed the cooler and cooler flows 3.4 quarts a minute. Had to go back thru it this week for overheating. The gauge in the truck matches scanner readings. Drive it about 10 miles and the needle goes from about 1/4 of the way (low to normal) to just under hot in a split second. Failed 2nd gear again and as of this morning, no reverse. He made sure the bypass wasn't clogged. He re replaced solenoid pack and main valve body to make sure not an issue. Every valve is free. No scoring on valves or in valve bores. Boost valve set into bore properly with snap ring (didn't pop out) did not "over build" the shift kit. Said it had perfect shift and perfect feel.

mismatched stator tube and stator , by-pass in stator tube , or the by-pass tube itself . if the by-pass tube was not taken apart or replace there could be crap stuck in there .

Stator was a reman with a new bypass in it but I presume it could be stuck as well. I will check that when he brings it. Thank you.

Also, do you mean that the stator tube can be mismatched to the stator inside the torque converter or tube to pump half? Original stator anf pump half eere original to trans and this stator/pump half were the reman and same numbers as original

I get the trans back tomorrow and I will verify that for certain. That is what I am looking for. My book has nothing in it about that and when I got it, it said "includes tech bulletins from sources other than Ford". Thank you sir. :-)

He wound up not pulling the trans. He did some more scan work and found out it kept giving "SS1 shift fault (electrical)" and " SS2 shift fault (electrical)" and tried a PCM out of another truck. Didn't hickup once on him but I am afraid the trans got damaged already. He ordered a PCM and will find out later if that "fixes" it. I will keep you posted.
