1988 ranger 2.9 A4LD 4x4 FIXED

Post by bndtransmission » Thu Sep 07, 2017 11:33 am

Hey guys,

I have a return after 5k mile overhaul, reverse intermittently wont be there (like in neutral) after about 5 seconds or more and revving it will engage, also
no 3rd (neutrals).. any ideas? Can valve body issue cause this?

Thanks,
Brent

Update: disassembly found the metal sleeve on the end of the center support was loose and moving around and direct clutches smoked, so i replaced the center support, reset rear end play and reassemble...all forward gears are good now...it had reverse initially but customer got home and it doesnt have reverse now so i picked it up and verified no reverse, also it does not have engine braking in manual low, so i removed pan and servo cover, band is not broken, seals on servo are good, so i removed valve body to inspect which leads me to this question, does anyone have a good breakdown of valve body on a 1988 A4LD? I was going to inspect the reverse engagement control valve according to my a4ld info but my valve body doesnt have a valve just a spring in the reverse valve location? kinda confused, any ideas please?

Just inspected and found the cutback valve stuck completely, the spring was completely compressed...anyone know if this can cause no reverse?

Update: it took some time but i polished the cutback bore until the valve would fall out under its own weight...i would like to note that from factory there is NOT a return spring for the valve but when installing Transgo shift kit it has you install the spring fyi, cleaned and double checked all other valves, reassembled and retest, reverse is good and solid, going to drive it over the weekend, put some miles on it just to be sure..
