Jeep NP245 transfer case does not come out of 4WD

Post by dmatchett » Thu Mar 03, 2016 10:03 am

A frequent complaint with the Jeep models with a NP245 transfer case fails to come out of 4WD
even when the shift lever is in the 2WD position, the cause of this problem is the tires are mismatched
or one tire has very low tire pressure. The mode fork in the unit is spring loaded and cannot release
when shifted because the main shaft components are splined locked as a result of low tire pressure
or mismatched tires. The customer may tell you that it shifts perfect when the vehicle is on the lift,
that is true because the wheels are unloaded.

I just had a 1997 Ford F150 with the same problem. He had mismatched front tires and the front axle would not release unless you backed up about 10 to 20 feet.

I'm going to post a blog on the importance of checking tires when trouble shooting driveline issues,
seems that gets overlooked to often.

Very good point Dave, I preach this at all my differential and transfer case seminars with
the advantages of using one. Part number 910-82017.
