anyone know of a "heavy duty" B-85 TMBX

Post by articfriends » Thu Oct 31, 2013 5:14 pm

I built a trans for a customer a few years ago, lifted, pumped up 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4 with 6.0 liter, we went all out on everything, 5 pinion Delco planets, hd sunshell, transgo sk, boost valve, billet twin piston 4th servo, hd 2ndservo, wide second band with new reverse input drum, new electronics, big cooler etc. Came back after about 65,000 miles, chocked full of metal, most parts inside would have still been 100% perfect if it wasn't for all the metal that went thru them. Threw the convertor in our big lathe and cut it open just for hell of it, convertor was out of warranty and I had a spare b-85 core to turn in , big Torrington thrust bearing inside had split the race and pieces of it went thru the pump cover and turbine fins then metal went thru EVERYTHING. Called a few places I deal with that will build "heavy duty" torque convertors but to keep a stock stall speed for truck use all I could get was something with extra brazing on the fins and that wasn't problem anyways , trucks back together and gone now but any suggestions for next time, thanks, Smitty

This is the first rebuilt B-85 I have had self destruct out of about 120 or so using both Dacco and Transtars convertors but what my real question is my customer was more than willing to pay extra to get a beefed up convertor to replace this one that broke and other than some xtra furnace brazing to the fins I did not find a "beefed up" version for sale that would allow me to keep the stall at stock level. I have a supplier that builds me beefy bullet proof billet cover convertors and he builds all the billet parts himself and for some of the other convertor builders but he couldn't do anything for me, was just wondering if any one had a answer, job is done and gone now anyways so its a moot point now, Smitty

The problem is I was looking for a beefed up LOW or STOCK stall, those start at:
PP7731EXLS 2500-2900 STALL which is too high, but thanks for posting, Smitty

2500 stall only comes into play on take off it gives trucks more launch, faster accel , once you are at cruise you go to lockup and stall is irrelavent. one of our most popular convertors for trucks.

Did you try a daco supplier. I am new too replying on this site and thought it may be a start. Have been a Toronto Ontario builder for 35 plus years and have called it quits at the age of 53. made my money and going to enjoy it
