6L80 2012 Yukon XL 5.3 4WD

My son just bought a 2012 Yukon XL 4WD with around 150K on it. Very clean, well maintained, but trans took a dump. Goes in gear, drives a little bit, goes 1-2 then neutrals. It will not move after that unless you shut it off and let it sit a while. (I am assuming a clog). The trans fluid is pretty similar to used diesel oil. Or (units fried, another assumption).Original owner said the trans temp never exceeded 170 degrees. He used it to drive back and forth to upstate NY on weekends and local driving during the week. I have a similar Suburban , same trans, and mine rarely ever reaches 170, and then only with the car trailer on the back. They are going to pull it out this week. Anything special I should look for? I bought the sonnax 4-5-6 piston kit, apply plate someone bought for theirs and never used, so what else should I need? I plan on a full kit, bushings, bearings, converter. Should I get a shift kit, if so what one if there are multiples. ( will use to tow either a 28 foot boat or a 26 ft enclosed race car trailer w 3500lb car.) I could really use some input. Any tricks to this unit, I never sow the inside of one yet. Thanks. Al / Borotow
