1988 AOD very late upshift

Post by bndtransmission » Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:46 pm

Hey guys,

Got a strange one here. Foxbody with an AOD came in wont upshift and slips. I verified very delayed engagement into drive, wouldnt upshift and
then started slipping, took it apart, forward was smoked, completed overhaul, went thru valve body, put it in and test drive. Still wont upshift, atleast
until about 4k rpm then it will...ok heres the strange thing ive found.. i can stand at engine and stroke the TV cable in and out-its nice and smooth..then if i start the car the TV cable will only move 1/4 of the way and is not smooth anymore..shut engine off and TV operation is back to normal..so i replaced the valve body and it has the same exact issue..I'm completely bumfuzzled! Has anyone ever put the governor on backwards? I know to check and make sure the ports are pointed in proper direction but honestly i cant clearly remember checking...i thought it wouldnt upshift at all if that were the case but not sure..any ideas?? Although it was working fine prior to the no upshift...

I would check the TV pressure to see what it is doing and maybe recheck the governor assembly
and governor fluid passages.

So, i just removed tailhousing and checked governor orientation which was correct. Disassembled governor, it may have been a little sticky, i cleaned it and will recheck operation and pressure tomorrow...

Ok, so i put it back together and retest, TV wont move but 1/2 way so i installed a gauge to test TV pressure..strangely it had about 10 psi and TV felt normal and pressures rise when pulling cable..so i removed the gauge and it goes back to not working! Im thoroughly confused!

Thank you! Do you by chance have hydraulic schematic of TV and governor circuits?
