2005 silverado 4.8 4L60 strange noise

Post by bndtransmission » Thu Mar 12, 2020 4:10 pm

Got an odd one here..In Park sounds fine, Reverse fine until moving, neutral has a loud growling/grumbling sound that changes with rpm, Drive sitting still sounds fine but as you start rolling the growling/grumbling starts-too scared to drive it into second or 3rd...using Stethoscope i hear the noise in the trans and transfer case-I listened in neutral-it is loud and obnoxious....when first put into neutral the noise starts from a stop and winds up faster and faster..its as if something starts turning once put into neutral....its definitely not a cracked flywheel as i've seen in the past..any ideas? Planetary?

Just a follow up. I tore the trans down and did indeed find the very rear planetary was missing 4 teeth in various places...i didnt realize it spun in neutral..
Its a fix!
